Nancy Smith was born in Boston where she originally went into the Art world with the encouragement of her Mom but after attending Art College back East she soon realized it wasn’t for her. During that time she picked up a camera and found much more independence with it. “I WAS REALLY SHY GROWING UP AND THE CAMERA BECAME SOMEWHAT OF A CRUTCH TO HIDE BEHIND AND GIVE ME THE COURAGE TO GO PLACES ALONE” and without any formal photography training she began her life in photography!

Massachusetts wasn’t holding her interest so she decided to vacation at a Ranch in Tucson AZ in ’91 & ’92 and it was then she realized that she belonged out West and moved to Tucson soon after the 2nd trip. She had worked with a Pro photographer and at a Pro Photo Lab in Mass.so the obvious thing to do was apply for a job at the biggest Lab in Tucson…Jones Photo where she worked for almost 16 years. What she learned in those past jobs along with this new one put her on the path to freelance photography which then led to Weddings, Family portraits, Wildlife (including venomous Snakes and Bison!) , Storms, Sunsets and Native American events. In 1998 she saw an ad in the paper for a local Powwow which after shooting that event began her career in Native American event photography. “IT TOOK ME ABOUT 2 YEARS TO REALLY GET MY FOOT IN THE DOOR SINCE A BLONDE PHOTOGRAPHER WAS SOMEWHAT FROWNED UPON IN THOSE CIRCLES”! but eventually she was asked to be THE photographer at their events all around the Southwest from Powwows, Indian Markets to other different events.
Amarillo became home in 2010 and she had to establish new ties which began in the Music world photographing the local bands which led to wedding and family shoots but the love of Nature never went away so Wildcat Bluff Nature Center and Palo Duro Canyon became the obvious new get away spots!
After meeting some of the Comanches performing at Palo Duro Canyon years ago she was invited up to Lawton OK for one of their Powwows which led to  other Native events in OK andTX along with continuing to shoot around the Southwest.
“FOR AS MANY DIFFERENT SUBJECTS AS I PHOTOGRAPH MY LOVES ARE THE NATIVE WORLD & BEING OUT IN NATURE WITH THE SKY & WILDLIFE SO I HOPE TO CONTINUE ON THIS PATH FOR MANY MORE YEARS TO COME!                                   ~Nancy Smith~
